Commands to install FreeOffice on Debian 11 Bullseye

With FreeOffice, Microsoft documents can usually be opened, edited, and saved within FreeOffice without losing formatting. The visually oriented software is also more powerful which makes you feel like you are using some free office version. This allows you to use a modern ribbon menu, as I am used to using MS Word. FreeOffice also includes a classic menu including Light and Dark Mode. In addition, there is a touch screen mode, which greatly improves finger operation.

Steps to install FreeOffice on Debian 11 Linux

1. Update Debian 11 Bullseye

Well, this is not necessary here because we are about to use the Deb binary for the program. However, to ensure that your system has all the latest updates, run the given command once.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

2. Download Softmaker FreeOffice

Well, the open source Office suite packages – LibreOffice are available via Debian 11’s default system repository, but the same is not true of FreeOffice. So, we need to download the Debian binary manually. We can use SoftMaker’s repository method, however, while doing this article it wasn’t working. Here is the link to visit download page. 3. Install FreeOffice on Linux Debian 11

Well, we have the Deb binary for FreeOffice; Now simply run the given DPKG command to install FreeOffice on Debian 11.

First, switch to the Downloads directory because everything we download using the browser by default goes to that.

cd Downloads
sudo dpkg -i softmaker-freeoffice-*_amd64.deb

4. Launch the Office suite

Once the installation is complete to start the various applications of FreeOffice, go to the application launcher, then search for it.

5. To update FreeOffice

If there is some new version available on the Softmaker for FreeOffice website, visit it and then download the latest version as we did above and install it the same way we used DPKG.

6. Uninstall or remove FreeOffice from Debian 11

If you think Softmaker FreeOffice is not working for you and you want to remove it completely, here is the command to do it.

sudo apt autoremove --purge softmaker-freeoffice-2021
